Working with new musicians is nothing new for Ella Jayne. Since she first sang in public at eight years old, Ella Jayne has sung at events ranging from talent shows to the Shamrock FC MMA Fight.
When she started to play with local band Calvert & Williams, she says it was a mixed feeling. “It wasn’t really like omg I’m so excited to do this it was like oh…I’m doing this. Stephen still gives me tips as a musician, I just think that sometimes he tries to push me beyond my limits, but that’s what they are supposed to do. I have definitely improved my singing with them compared to at MOZINGO because I now have a band to back me up.”
Learning To Reach New Heights
Working with Calvert & Williams has been an excellent learning experience, as they have taught Ella Jayne how to reach new heights. “They’ve taught me about pushing myself to the limits but not hurting my voice and how important it is to not go too far and damage my voice. The stuff in between the notes really counts and what you say to the crowd makes the performance because they want to know if you are capable enough to talk to people without sounding awkward, kind of a natural feel.”
The Pros & Cons Of Singing With New People
Like everything in life, singing with new people has its pros and cons—but Ella Jayne doesn’t let that stop her!
“I really like singing with new people because it gives me new opportunities and new ways of life because you never know who you’re going to deal with and getting this experience is really good for my future”
When asked how she prepares herself to work with new musicians, Ella Jayne explains that she has to prepare herself mentally.
“I never know how they are going to be, if they are going to be good or bad, if I’m gonna like them, and so on. I also focus on learning the songs that the band knows and if I have to make changes to the key to fit my range.”
And sometimes, working with new musicians can come with a unique challenge. “Some can be judgier than others. They can critique things that I’ve been told are right and sometimes don’t understand where I’m coming from.” To help with this, Ella Jayne lives by a quote:
“The question is never do you sound good or look good, the answer to that is always yes, but the real question is can other people handle it because sometimes the answer is no.”
When asked which band she would love to sing with, her answer is immediate. “100% the Eagles, because their harmonies are outstandingly amazing!”
